This is a general term that is used to describe certain types of harm made to older adults. Adult abuse comes in many forms. It can involve physical abuse such as hitting, slapping or pushing; shouting or swearing which makes the person afraid; or unwanted touching, kissing or sexual assault. It can also be in the form of financial abuse such as when money or property is being taken without consent. Not being cared for properly is another form of adult abuse.
Perpetrators of elder abuse can include anyone in a position of trust, control or authority. Majority are close relatives such as the spouse or children. Elder abuse may also be a consequence of practices in care institutions. These are either willful acts of cruelty or a consequence of poor training. What is surprising is that sometimes the elders cause the abuse on themselves. This happens when they refuse to be taken care of as far as their personal health and well being is concerned.
