This is a cotton strip with an acrylic adhesive that is designed to mimic the qualities of the human skin. Invented by a Japanese chiropractor, it was initially used by chiropractors, orthopedists, acupuncturists and other medical practitioners. Later it was adopted by professional athletes and now therapeutic tape is being used in virtually all clinical conditions. Kinesiology is just one of several methods of taping that are accepted by chiropractors. Traditional methods make use of rigid tapes that are uncomfortable and can be used for shorter periods of time.
The Kinesio taping technique uses a highly specific designed tape that works with the body allowing a full range of motion. It can be left on the body for as long as 3 to 5 days. Its water resistant quality allows the user to take showers during this period. It is latex-free making it hypoallergenic. For this reason, it is safe to use in pediatric and senior patients.
