Two Types of Bone Marrow Transplants

Stem cells are characterized by their ability to regenerate or renew themselves through mitotic cell division. These special cells can be found in a person’s bone marrow. The stem cells from the bone marrow eventually become blood cells. If a person has a blood disease like leukemia and aplastic anemia, it means that the bone marrow is unhealthy. This usually requires surgery.
There are two types of bone marrow transplants. An autologous bone marrow transplant means that the donor is the same as the recipient. The allogenic bone marrow transplant means the donor is another person with the same genetic type as the recipient. This donor could usually be a family member, but in cases where it doesn’t match the recipient, the hospital searches for an unrelated individual with the same tissue type or a close match.
