Patients who are advised to wear functional braces should not think twice about its effectiveness. Functional braces help support damaged body parts. Some braces are there as a preventive tool, more to ensure prevention of a possible injury. Athletes in high impact and contact sports like rugby and water sports wear braces to prevent injury. There are, however, some who feel that if it is not needed, it should not be worn as it can cause harm to the athlete.
Knee braces are necessary to support and take over the function of a damaged knee or ligaments around the knee. These are designed to protect the MCL (Medial Collateral Ligaments), LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament), Meniscus, ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament). They are there to limit movement including extension and flexion of the knee joint. Aside from being used by athletes, knee braces provide relief to people suffering from arthritis in the knees. It helps them in being mobile, albeit with limitations.
