Fibromyalgia is a medical disorder that is manifested through chronic widespread pain and a intense painful response to pressure. Other symptoms include joint stiffness, sleep disturbance and debilitating fatigue. Some patients also say they have difficulty with swallowing as well as experience bowel and bladder abnormalities, cognitive dysfunction, and numbness and tingling.
There is no fibromyalgia cure yet but there are treatments that have been seen in clinical trials to be effective in reducing symptoms. Some of these treatments include medications, patient education, behavioral interventions, and exercise. Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect about two to four percent of the population. Female to male incidence ratio is approximately 9:1.
