A disease that affects millions of Americans should never be taken lightly. The disease is diabetes and it affects as much as 16 million Americans. But what is diabetes? Diabetes is a constant disease. A person with diabetes has a condition in which the amount of glucose in his blood is too high. His body does not produce enough insulin or produces no insulin at all. It could also be that his cells that do not respond properly to the insulin.
We know that diabetes afflicts mostly older people but we also know that there children or youngsters who have already been diagnosed with diabetes. So what is diabetes doing with children? Juvenile diabetes or type 1 diabetes is a type of autoimmune disease. This means that the body’s system for fighting off infections, called its immune system, is attacking a part of the body itself. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks certain cells in the pancreas called beta cells. These beta cells produce insulin.
