How to Operate a Defibrillator

It is a good idea to furnish a home with occupants who have gone through a heart attack with this medical equipment. In case of a cardiac arrest a defibrillator will help to reestablish normal rhythm of the heart. Training is also recommended for adult members of the household so that they will not panic and be able to do their job efficiently. Learning CPR can also be part of cardiac care training.
Operating defibrillators is not that difficult. It can be done in these easy steps:
- Confirm that the patient is suffering from cardiac arrest – he is not responding and there is no breathing and pulse.
- Attach the AED to defibrillator pads and cables.
- Apply pads to the victim’s chest.
- Allow the AED to analyze the heart rhythm.
- If a shock is indicated by the AED, push the shock button. If a shock is recommended (sometimes it is not) make certain everyone “stands clear”, and does not touch the patient
- Administer CPR if advised to do so.
