Defibrilators have been found to be effective in saving lives in hospitals. It has also been found helpful for people who respond to emergency cases in the streets and other public places. A portable defibrillator will be perfect in these instances. Manufacturers of these machines are eyeing the big potential market of people at risk of having seizures because of previous heart attacks. These high risk patients are eager to have their own automated external defibrillators or AEDs to insure that they can be provided with life-saving jolts of electricity in the event that they will need it.

But the medical profession is divided as to the efficacy of AEDs in homes. Some say that they should be treated like a fire extinguisher. There should be one in every home, especially in homes of people at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. There are those who claim that defibrillators are highly effective in hospitals but not in homes. They have studies to show that deaths due to SCA in homes with AEDs are just as many as those in homes who do not have it.
