Nutrition 101

The six major classes of nutrients are protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and water. These classes can be categorized as either micronutrients or macronutrients. Macronutrients are nutrients needed in large amounts while micronutrients are needed in smaller amounts. Carbohydrates, fats, fiber, protein, and water fall under macronutrients. Minerals and vitamins are micronutrients. The nutritional information of a food product can be found in the back of its packaging. Below is a brief description of each nutrient.
Sugars, starches and fiber are carbohydrates which give the body energy. Depending on the detailed structure of the fatty acids involved, fats may be classified as either saturated or unsaturated. The basis of many animal body structures are proteins also form the enzymes that control chemical reactions throughout the body. The chemical elements required by living organisms are (dietary) minerals. Vitamins are a dietary necessity to maintain a good health as it is an essential nutrient. Water is needed for proper hydration of the body.
