As we age, production of certain compounds in the body slows down. One of these is glucosamine which is needed to produce glycosaminoglycan, a molecule needed in the formation and repair of cartilage and other body tissues. Glucosamine can be bought as a nutritional supplement in health food stores and drug stores.
Glucosamine supplements are extensively used by those who suffer from osteoarthritis. In this condition, cartilage or the soft material that cushions joints loses its elasticity and becomes stiff. It makes the joints susceptible to damage that may lead to swelling, loss of movement, pain and further deterioration.
